St. Louis Black Gay & Lesbian Pride Committee will celebrate its 7th year of existence this year, and some in the St. Louis GLBTQ community still ask the question, “Why is there a Black Gay Pride?” Founded in 2000, the St. Louis Black Gay & Lesbian Pride Committee, joined a national movement in the gay community of mobilizing and empowering Black gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender persons across the country to not only celebrate who they are, but to come together to heal and uplift their Black same gender loving families and communities. That’s what Black Gay Pride is about, supporting and healing that part of us that longs to connect with other people like us.

The mission of St. Louis Black Gay Pride is to serve as a resource for the St. Louis metropolitan‘s Black lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community, and be a catalyst for unity, empowerment, and pride through the delivery of education and outreach activities. To that end, St. Louis Black Gay Pride advocates on behalf of the Black same gender loving community through its community forums, media contacts, and by meeting with elected and non-elected community leaders to communicate the unique challenges facing our community, and develop the tools necessary to address those challenges.

The annual Black Gay Pride Festival, a 3-day weekend community wide event, serves as an opportunity for not only displaying the strong Black Gay Pride of St. Louis’s same gender loving communities, but to galvanize those in the community around improving lives for us as individuals and as a community. Community forums during Pride weekend attempt to address current social issues that impact the community. Social activities, like the kick-off reception have offered opportunities for us to recognize and honor supporters of Black Gay Pride, and its purpose. The festival at the plaza, serves as an opportunity to celebrate, learn, share, and shine; this is truer than ever, as Black Gay Pride celebrates in the heart of downtown St. Louis at Keiner Plaza.

So, what is St. Louis Black Gay & Lesbian Pride Committee about? It’s about you. It’s about the same gender loving you that deserves to be who you are.
